Lara Sousa

Lara Sousa is a director and visual artist, founder of Kulunga Filmes, a production company whose main goal is to produce films (documentaries and fiction) by emerging filmmakers from Portuguese-speaking African countries and the southern region of Africa.

She recently premiered her first feature-length documentary, “Nós, Povo das Ilhas” (We, People of the Islands), filmed in Cape Verde and featured in industry venues such as Cannes Doc.

Lara has been selected for several artistic residencies: Lapa Goethe Institute South Africa; Cité des Arts La Reunion; Colab Now Now, among others. Her short films have won numerous awards and been screened at festivals such as FESPACO, DAKAR 2022, and MAM Rio.

Lara’s projects have been funded by the HotDocs Blue Ice Fund, Sundance Documentary Fund, French Institute, and Portuguese National Fund, among others.
